TXL airport (lost place)

Tegel airport is the former main airport of Berlin. The place has been an airfield for over 100 years, and the characteristic – and at this time very modern – buildings were constructed between 1965 and 1975. Tegel airport (TXL) became the main airport during the period of German division until the fall of the Berlin wall and beyond.

Tegel airport was closed in the year 2020, the last plane left the airport on November 8th. Since then, the airport is closed to the public, but can be visited in guided tours. A lot of explosive materials are still in the ground of the airport area which need to be fully cleared over many years to come before the area can be used again.
